ABOUT STONE ICONS

Established more than 10 years ago, Stone Icons have produced over two thousand sculptural pieces in hand carved marble, including beautiful figurative works originally by Giambologna, Michelangelo, Bosio, and the great neo-classical sculptors,
Canova and Thorvaldsen.

Led by Creative Director Alan Birkinshaw, our experience enables us to produce hand carved statues of any size, considerably less in money and time, than it would take in Europe.

As well as original sculptures, we have produced marble copies of iconic works, the originals of which not even the richest person in the world could hope to own.

Our figurative  work of Thorvaldsen’s “Alexander The Great’s Triumphal entry into Babylon”, some 35 metres in length, and the story  telling Borghese and Medici vases, are some of our more impressive achievements.

We work with several different stones, from marble, sandstone, Portland Stone and granite, and from time to time, we produce sculptures in bronze.

Creative Director of
Stone Icons

In a career spanning several decades, Alan Birkinshaw has been immersed in the art of story telling. Having written screenplays for the cinema and directed several major feature films, with international stars, Alan turned his attention to story telling using the oldest known visual medium of all – the medium of stone.

And more specifically, marble.

Alan says…

“When we originally set about re-creating some of the world’s most famous sculptures, in hand carved marble, we were unsure how it would work out. Could we possibly re-create statues, virtually indistinguishable from the originals that were carved by the world renowned masters of sculpture?

Well, the answer was YES, We could and we did. We copied Canovas and Thorvaldsens and Rodins, to name but a few. And the reason we are able to produce almost exact copies of the originals, admired by thousands of people in museums every day of the year, is firstly, because we have access to some of the best clay modellers and marble carvers in the world, and secondly, because of the preparation and time we spend ensuring that at all stages, the sculptures we are producing are identical in every way possible to the originals.”

As Creative Director of Stone Icons, Alan has personally overseen the hand carved production of all Stone Icons work, including accurate and precise re-creations of some of the most beautiful and iconic sculptures of all time. Some of these sculptures are full size – some of them scaled down versions.

But whatever the size, the same skill and care is put into each and every piece.
